European Banking Authority (EBA) will check whether supervisors of Danske Bank in Denmark and Estonia followed necessary rules in this situation. Bank may face $1,7 billion fine after its Estonian unit acknowledged that it was used to launder big part of $234 billion from 2007 to 2015.
According to EU law, anti-laundering supervision is within scope of responsibility of national regulators. But although necessary investigation in Estonian unit was conducted, there are doubts about depth of investigation as well as about adequacy of imposed sanctions.
EBA will issue recommendations, implementation of which will be further controlled by European Commission.
EBA also started conducting similar investigations in regards to conclusions of regulatory authorities in Latvia and Malta on money laundering incidents.
