Revenues of hotels in Barcelona, capital of Spain’s region Catalonia, fell this summer by 14%, Reuters reports with the reference to trade association. It seems that the city gained negative reputation in the world.

Tourism accounts for 11% of country’s economic output. This sectors is also the largest employer in Spain. However, reduction in the number of guests in July, which is a key month of a year, suggests that the sector’s growth reached its peak after showing record levels in recent years.

Occupancy rate of hotels near the sea fell insignificantly, however, price reduction by 7% in July and by 19% in August hurt revenues.

On the other hand, average spend of international tourists in Spain grew by 9,5% in July.

Barcelona’s image deteriorated recently due to lower safety, growing anti-social behavior and worse cleaning of public places. Political instability of the region also played its role.
